Senator Seeks Data on Zimmer Durom® Hip & Knee Implants

Awards & recognition

A senior U.S. senator is asking questions about reported problems with Zimmer hip and knee replacement systems, and is asking the medical device manufacturer whether there are problems with other products that have not yet been reported.

Zimmer Knee Replacement Lawsuit Update 7/13/12: Nearly a year after a panel of judges consolidated all federal Zimmer knee replacement lawsuits into a multidistrict litigation (MDL), lawyers involved with the cases are scheduled to meet with the MDL court today to discuss the upcoming proceedings. When the Zimmer litigation was originally consolidated in August 2011, the MDL panel transferred 18 cases from different federal districts throughout the country to the Northern District of Illinois for coordinated management during pretrial proceedings. Since then, more than 440 additional lawsuits filed in other U.S. District Courts have been transferred into the Zimmer NexGen MDL, with nearly 100 of the complaints coming in the last month alone.

What’s the problem?

August 3, 2010 - Last week, Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa asked Zimmer Holdings to disclose how it tracked the long-term performance of its orthopedic devices. Zimmer, which is based in Warsaw, Ind., said in a statement that it welcomed the opportunity to discuss its policies, including how it responded to surgeon complaints. In his letter, Senator Grassley requested additional information on what the company was doing to respond to complaints about failures in the Zimmer Durom Hip Cup replacement system and Zimmer NexGen knee replacement system.

Grassley reportedly asked Zimmer for details on its process to respond to safety concerns. He also asked whether there were consultants who had raised concerns about Zimmer implants and requested that the company provide detailed information on the consultant, implants and the problems reported, and whether the reports ever led to a Zimmer recall.

Approximately 12,000 individuals had the Zimmer Durom Cup system implanted in their hip between 2006 and 2008. While Zimmer’s own estimates in 2008 suggested that some doctors have experienced failure rates as high as 5.7%, more recent claims made in Zimmer Durom Cup suggest that the artificial hip failure rate is between 20% and 30%.
